Folding Chairs Inspiration

folding metal chair

When you book The Great Barn Devon for your event, rather than providing you with a standard set of furniture, we give our clients the choice of all our chairs and tables; you can see them all over on our sister website The Great Event.

And whilst, to some, a chair is a chair is a chair, we think it’s an important choice. One that will sit perfectly with a theme or current trend; one that will offer comfort for bottoms of all sizes.

We’ve had a little rummage through our favourite bridal blogs and below are just some of the ways you can style your wedding or party, with one of the season’s current trends – the folding chair.

20 Ways To Entertain Your Wedding Guests http://thegreatbarndevon.co.uk/20-ways-to-entertain-your-wedding-guests/ http://thegreatbarndevon.co.uk/20-ways-to-entertain-your-wedding-guests/#respond Thu, 02 Feb 2017 08:00:20 +0000 http://thegreatbarndevon.co.uk/?p=4478

20 Ways To Entertain Your Wedding Guests

wedding reception games

Entertaining your guests has never been easier. There are so many ways to interact with your friends and family and keep them happy and relaxed at those ‘in between’ times of your big day.  Here are just some ideas that have worked really well with our wedding couples; we’d love to know what you are planning to do.

Book a traditional or themed photo booth and let your wedding guests loose with props and accessories. Or try a video booth and let your friends and family leave you messages of love and luck.

If your wedding venue has a no music policy (some that are situated very near to other homes, perhaps), then why not try a silent disco. We can’t recommend these enough. You can create your own playlists, and each person wearing a pair of headphones can switch to the playlist of their choice.

Use a specialist company who will edit a music video for you, using your guests as the singers and players in your wedding video and Bob’s your Uncle, a really unique way to commemorate your wedding day.

Hire singing waiters or papparazzi or other such characters, to mingle amongst your wedding guests and entertain them during dinner.

Dance lessons aren’t just for the bride and groom. Hire a salsa teacher for the evening or split your party into groups and challenge each other to a dance off.

Really get your wedding guests interacting with some fun, themed entertainment. Try oversized traditional games like giant Jenga, Connect 4, or good old-fashioned school games like sack racing, egg & spoon or ring toss.

Or what about a circus theme with a coconut shy, a low wire, beat-the-buzzer and hook-a-duck. Or perhaps a seaside treat with ice-cream vans, make your own candy floss, toffee apples and kissing booths.

Or if you want to give your guests more of a challenge, what about assigning them all a character and creating a whodunnit, Cluedo style game, or design a treasure hunt with clues and fun prizes.

Giving your guests something to do that they can then take away with them, is a really good idea. Create a Make Your Own stand for jewellery, friendship bracelets, flower crowns or photo frames.

pimp your cupcake, cocktail bar, beer pong, toasted marshmallows

If the way to your guests’ hearts are through their stomachs, then food and drink themed entertainment is a winner.

Create a stand or trolley with lots of different juices, toppings, herbs, icings, sprinkles, mixers and Pimp your prosecco/gin/ice-cream/cupcake.

Hire a couple of flaring waiters to create the ultimate cocktails Tom Cruise would be proud of. Or set up a beer pong tournament (or juice filled cups for kiddies). Finish the official celebrations with a firepit and marshmallows to toast, complete with massive mugs of hot chocolate.

For your hardcore guests who are not ready to call it a night, why not carry on the celebrations at a secret location for the wedding after party. Text them codes and directions and party til dawn!

karaoke, caricatures, magicians, bouncy castle and casino

Traditional forms of entertainment will always be a crowd pleaser. Karaoke booths for the wannabe Frank Sinatras and Madonnas. Caricature artists to bring out the best (or worst) in your guests. Magicians for close-up table magic during courses and a big old bouncy castle for kids (of all ages).

And of course, for those willing to take risks, a casino complete with poker tables, roulette wheels and other ways to lose your pretend money.

Lighting Your Wedding Day http://thegreatbarndevon.co.uk/lighting-your-wedding-day/ http://thegreatbarndevon.co.uk/lighting-your-wedding-day/#respond Fri, 27 Jan 2017 08:00:37 +0000 http://thegreatbarndevon.co.uk/?p=4475

Lighting Your Wedding Day

When you book your wedding ceremony/reception in a barn, it’s safe to say that you might expect it to be a bit darker than your usual venue.

Here at The Great Barn, Devon, from the outside our barn has all the charms and history of its 17th century birth date, but on the inside, the barn has been lovingly and sympathetically restored with a few 21st century additions; a state-of-the-art lighting system being one of them.

Lighting can give your wedding march real theatre. Change it for the breakfast so it’s light and sociable and then drop the lights to a wonderfully magical glow for your special first dance and the following knees-up! BTW our lovely John comes included to be on hand all day and evening and make sure that your lighting is exactly right at all times.

Why not add extra natural light to your ceremony with church candles in storm lanterns lining the aisle, or festoons of fairy lights draped across the ceiling or across an outside seating area. And finish with a toasty firepit, complete with marshmallows and hot chocolate whilst you watch the fireworks overhead.

Lighting may not be high on your list of priorities when planning your big day, but don’t forget that creating the right ambience and atmosphere, can add so much to it. Speak to us about how we can truly personalise your wedding.

Great Barn Devon Weddings – Emma & Paul http://thegreatbarndevon.co.uk/great-barn-weddings-emma-paul/ http://thegreatbarndevon.co.uk/great-barn-weddings-emma-paul/#respond Fri, 23 Dec 2016 08:00:00 +0000 http://thegreatbarndevon.co.uk/?p=4395

Great Barn Weddings – Emma & Paul

Weddings at The Great Barn are always special, but when Emma and Paul came to see us, they were looking for help with a potential disaster.  It was our absolute pleasure to host their incredible day with so many beautiful elements; the floral arrangements, the VERY cute flower girls, and the fireworks! We were also happy to see our festoon lighting and fire pit in full use, as the wedding guests took full advantage of all the Barn has to offer.

Here’s Emma and Paul’s story, as told by the beautiful bride. They were married at All Saint’s Church in the picturesque village of Kenton on 22nd October.

“We met online, we were both reluctant to give online dating a go but had friends encouraging us. We met each other in our first week of signing up and it grew from there.

Paul took me on a weekend away to Winchester as we’d visited once before early in our relationship. Paul had booked a table at The Chesil Rectory restaurant (a favourite of mine!) and suggested a pre-dinner stroll along the river where he popped the question with a bespoke ring he’d had designed.

We actually originally had our wedding booked elsewhere but unfortunately it was cancelled two weeks before the day. As you can imagine it was upsetting but we looked into other options and were so thankful to find that The Great Barn could accommodate us. We live in Cambridge so jumped in the car and headed down to Devon to see the barn and thought it was beautiful. John & Emma were so kind and accommodating and made us feel that rearranging the wedding in this short period would be completely achievable.

I wore a Ronald Joyce A line dress with lace detail in champagne and ivory. My accessories were a pearl bracelet and earrings to pick up on the pearl and Swarovski detail on the waistband of my dress. My sister in law made my veil for me, this was a simple scallop edge fingertip veil, which complemented the dress beautifully.

Paul wore Carisbrooke tails in navy with a grey double breasted waistcoat. His tie was an antique pink to pick up on the colour of the bridesmaid’s dresses.

Dartmoor Kitchen catered both our wedding and a family meal the evening before held in the West Barn. The food and service they provided was just incredible. We enjoyed the Dartmoor feast on the Friday evening and on the wedding day itself we enjoyed canapes during our reception then a 3 course meal for the wedding breakfast. Going into the evening we opted for a cheese board alongside a selection of Tom’s pies. Our guests are still talking about how delicious the food was and how they were indeed the best pies they’ve ever had!

Paul’s brother and sister in law stayed at the Bakehouse B&B located a short walk from The Great Barn. The owners were so friendly and accommodating and the Bakehouse was incredibly well equipped.

We utilised St Nectan & Figgy cottages on both the Friday and Saturday nights. Both cottages are so beautifully decorated and have everything you would ever need. Being able to stay on site made it so much easier to get ready and it was wonderful to have our family on site for the weekend. We’d certainly love to come back and stay in them again, perhaps for an anniversary.

We had a champagne and vintage pink theme. This was picked up in the flowers and cake. I wanted to keep it quite classic and simple and I just love that colour combination.

We could not have asked for a more wonderful day to celebrate our marriage. John & Emma’s attention to detail made the day so special. Stepping into the courtyard after our wedding breakfast was just stunning. John had arranged it so beautifully with festoon lighting, bistro tables & chairs and a fire pit to melt marshmallows on! My parents had organised a firework display to music with John’s help as a surprise. This was just incredible and made the day so special for us and our guests.

The Great Barn provides a stunning backdrop and John & Emma’s professionalism and attention to detail make it a truly unique venue. Having the ability to access the venue for the weekend made it so wonderful as it allowed us to spread out the celebrations across three days. The planning process was made so easy and we have received compliments from all our guests about how amazing the Great Barn was and we agree!”
